Barbara Tomasic (she/her) is an award-winning director of theatre, with a passion for large-scale musicals. She has worked across Canada directing, acting, producing and developing new works. Barbara is in demand as her skills as a musician, singer, dancer, actor and producer have branded her as a director who approaches the work from all sides, and is able to collaborate on every level.

Barbara has worked with such companies as The Arts Club Theatre Company, Soulpepper Theatre, Chemainus Theatre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, and the Firehall Arts Centre. She is currently the Director of Artistic Programs at Gateway Theatre, and was formerly the Co-Artistic Director at Musical Theatreworks, a company that specialized in developing new musical works.

Recently Barbara directed the hit production of Kinky Boots at Arts Club Theatre, which thrilled audiences and won an Ovation Award for Best Production. Her production of Crazy for You with Gateway Theatre was nominated for three Jessie Richardson Awards, including Outstanding Director, and 12 Ovation Awards including Outstanding Director, Production, Choreography and Set Design. She has directed musicals and plays in every possible kind of space, from traditional theatres, studio spaces, in the round, as well site specific pieces like the critically acclaimed Goblin Market, using two actors and a small orchestra in a small park.

A graduate of the University of British Columbia and JIPA with an MFA in Directing and a Diploma in Performance, Barbara’s love for theatre developed after hearing her Dad belt out Fiddler on the Roof in their living room. After training as a classical pianist, Barbara was bitten by the theatre bug and pursued her first dream to become an actor. Memorable roles for her include Maria in the Sound of Music, Anna in The King and I, and Cathy in the critically acclaimed Canadian Premiere of The Last Five Years (Jessie Nominated Performance) at the Firehall Arts Centre.
