Julie Hay was born in Toronto, Ontario. She trained at the Quinte Ballet School from 1989 to 1996. Ms. Hay joined The National Ballet of Canada as an apprentice in1996, and became a member of the corps de ballet in 1997. She was promoted to Second Soloist in 2003.

Her roles include the principal role in Emeralds in George Balanchine’s Jewels, as well as a lead role in Balanchine’s Serenade, Leto in Balanchine’s Apollo and Effy in La Sylphide. She has danced the Spanish Princess in Swan Lake, the Principal Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, Tall Girl in Elite Syncopations, The Prostitute in Glen Tetley’s La Ronde, Hermia in A Midsummer Nights Dream and Summer and Winter in The Four Seasons.

She created the role of Petal in James Kudelka’s Cinderella (2004) and danced in the world premieres of Matjash Mrozewski’s Wolf’s Court (2007), Kudelka’s An Italian Straw Hat (2005), The Contract (The Pied Piper) (2002), The Firebird (2000) and John Alleyne’s Tristan and Isolde (2003). Julie danced in the company premieres of George Balanchine’s Stravin- sky Violin Concerto (2004) and Jerome Robbins’ Opus 19 / The Dreamer (2005) and Bal-
anchine’s Don Quixote (2007).

Julie has also danced Queen of Hearts in Glen Tetley’s Alice, Arabian Coffee in The Nutcracker, Silver and Emerald variations in The Sleeping Beauty, Rubies and Diamond variations in Balanchine’s Jewels, the Chief Nursemaid in Michel Fokine’s Petrouchka, Rosalind and Lady Montague in Romeo and Juliet, and featured roles in Kudelka’s Cruel World, There, below, Musings, and Désir, Mrozewski’s A Delicate Battle, Dominique Dumais’ one hundred words for
snow and Makarova’s Paquita and Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments and Symphony in C. She has also performed in Onegin, The Merry Widow, Coppélia, Giselle, The Taming of the Shrew, La Bayadère, Madame Butterfly, The Fairy’s Kiss, Les Sylphides, Washington Square, Mozartiana and Terra Firma.

She has been featured is several award winning films ( The Calm Below, A Delicate Battle, The Firebird), and was most recently seen on stage as Penny Johnson in the Toronto Company of the musical Dirty Dancing
