Jon-Alex MacFarlane

CAEA | ACTRA

Jon-Alex MacFarlane was born in Seattle, Washington, and bounced around the States (and South Korea!) until his father took the family back to Halifax, and thus considers himself a Maritimer. His life in the arts began at age nine when he started playing the cello. This led to performing with the Halifax City School Orchestra (principal cellist in grade 12) and the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra (principal cellist for 2 years). At age 16, he saw his first musical, West Side Story, at one of the high schools, and thus began his love of the theatre. He studied at Dalhousie University, receiving a degree in Theatre, and performed in numerous shows in the Atlantic provinces.

Toronto became home in 1992, and though it took a while, he found his place in the theatre community. Life in the arts has allowed Jon-Alex to work and travel across North America, eventually leading him to meeting his wife Cat. He has been member of 5 productions of Once the Musical (Bank Manager), including Mirvish’s Dora Award Winning Canadian cast, 1st U.S. National Tour, Neptune, Chemainus, and Segal Centre (META nominee best supporting actor).

Other productions include:
Hairspray (Theatre Aquarius), Mamma Mia, Miss Saigon, Joseph (Drayton Entertainment), Fiddler on the Roof, Forever Plaid, Guys and Dolls, Joseph, Rocky Horror (Stage West Mississauga), Joseph (Stage West Calgary), Robin Hood (Ross Petty), Forever Plaid (New Yorker), and many others.
